Garage Door Cable Replacement in Skokie, Illinois

Garage Door Cable Replacement

Lift cables connect the springs to the bottom of the door. They look simple, but they carry the full lifting force, and when one fails the door can hang crooked or drop.

A crooked door is often a cable story

Cables run from the bottom brackets up to drums on the spring shaft. Over time moisture, salt from winter driveways, and rubbing against the frame wear the strands thin.

When a cable frays through or slips off its drum, one side of the door loses support. The door tilts, binds in the track, and can jam partly open.

What cable replacement covers

Because cables are under spring tension, the springs are unwound safely before the old cables are removed. Both cables are typically replaced together so they stretch and wear evenly.

The drums and bottom brackets are inspected for damage. New cables are threaded, seated in the drum grooves, and tensioned equally so the door lifts level.

What to look for on your own cables

You can inspect cables without touching them. Stand to the side of the door when it is closed and look at the cable running up from each bottom corner. Healthy cable looks uniform and tight. Warning signs include broken wire strands sticking out, rust staining, flattened spots, or a cable that looks thinner in one area.

Also look at the drums at the top of the door. Cable should sit neatly in the grooves without crossing over itself. Never touch, loosen, or adjust cables or bottom brackets, because they are connected to springs under high tension. If anything looks wrong, note which side and describe it when you call. Photos taken from a safe distance can also help explain what you are seeing.

How garage door cable replacement typically works

  1. Step 1

    Stabilize

The door is secured so it cannot shift or fall.

  2. Step 2

    Release

Spring tension is unwound with the correct tools.

  3. Step 3

    Replace

New cables are attached at the brackets and drums.

  4. Step 4

    Level

Tension is balanced and the door is cycled to check travel.

Check the connected hardware

Cables, drums, springs, and bottom brackets work as one assembly. When one part fails, it makes sense to look at the parts connected to it.

If the door is hanging at an angle, leave it in place, unplug the opener, and call (224) 470 7922 rather than trying to lower it by hand.
