Insulated Garage Door Installation in Skokie, Illinois

Insulated Garage Door Installation

If your garage shares a wall with the house, holds a workshop, or sits below a bedroom, the door is a large part of how that space handles Illinois winters and summer heat.

The coldest wall in the house

An uninsulated steel door is essentially a thin metal sheet. In January it carries outdoor cold straight into the garage, and from there into adjoining rooms.

Insulated doors add a core of polystyrene or polyurethane between steel skins. The result is a stiffer door that resists dents better and tends to run more quietly.

What installation includes

Doors are compared by construction and R value. Polyurethane cores generally offer higher R values for their thickness than polystyrene. The right choice depends on how you use the garage.

Insulated doors are heavier, so springs are sized for the new weight. Perimeter seals, a bottom seal, and section joint seals are fitted so the insulation is not undermined by gaps.

R value explained simply

R value measures resistance to heat flow. Higher numbers mean better insulation. Single layer steel doors have little insulating value. Doors with a polystyrene panel inside offer moderate values, and doors with injected polyurethane foam bonded to both skins often reach higher values while staying relatively thin.

Manufacturers measure R value in different ways, so compare doors from similar test methods when possible. Remember that the door is only part of the picture. An uninsulated garage wall, a gap at the threshold, or a worn perimeter seal can let more air through than the door itself blocks. For attached garages, pairing an insulated door with good seals tends to give the most noticeable comfort improvement in winter.

How insulated garage door installation typically works

  1. Step 1

    Discuss use

How you use the garage guides the insulation level.

  2. Step 2

    Compare

Core types, R values, and styles are reviewed.

  3. Step 3

    Install

The door goes in with springs sized for its weight.

  4. Step 4

    Seal

Weather stripping is fitted and checked for gaps.

Insulation is only as good as the seal

A well insulated door with a worn bottom seal will still let cold air pour in. Seals are part of every insulated installation.
